And thus I am torn. For you see, ACTOR (A Commitment To Our Roots) is a good cause, keeping those poor schlubs who created the comics that Marvel and DC are currently making millions off from having to spend Christmas down at the local soup kitchen. Products of a different time, they sacrificed the possibility of millions of dollars later for the job now and now many of them arent' as well off financially as some of their modern creative counterparts. The reason I am torn is I believe in ACTOR but I still can't muster up whatever it takes within me to pay seventeen bucks for somebody to staple a foil cover on Witchblade. I have the original at home and I have foil; I can make my own for much less money. You decide for yourself, and if you don't wanna spend twenty bucks for a virgin cover (how does that work anyway... did the other covers "do it"?) of Tomb Raider, check out ACTOR anyway and donate in other ways... or just donate in general. Probably the majority of the reason you love comics is because of the fine work those folks did.

It looks like Diamond has started dubbing all the Aftermath titles like this... Aftermath Blade of Kumori, etc. Besides being a headache for retailers, I don't see the purpose of this, unless it was determined that the Aftermath name had more value than the actual title name. Maybe If Marvel had called them New Universe Kickers Inc. or 2099 Ravage, these would be bestsellers still being published today!

I picked up the first one and it had some fun stories in it. Typical of anthologies and featuring up-and-comers to the industry. Well folks who wanna be up-and-comers. Will they be up-and-comers. Depends on who picks up and reads this magazine. If Joe Quesada picks it up and says "WOW THIS GUY RAWKS!," which is how I picture Joe commenting on art he appreciates, then that guy's got a job. If some guy who works at a restaurant bussing tables finds it under the seat where somebody dropped it and reads it, well that won't likely lead to superstardom for anyone.

I love Stan Sakai's artwork. It is as expressive and distinctive and clean and beautiful as the work of Sergio Aragones. As with Aragones, you can immediately identify a Sakia piece, even if it is not featuring his loveable ronin, Usagi Yojimbo. While an unorthodox selection for an Art Book, given the propensity for painters and girlie art books, a good choice. Anyone who wants to be a true cartoonist could do a lot worse than to study Sakai. I mean, look how much it has improved my work on www.rwtpv2.com... okay, bad example.

While I was still sorely disappointed to see the end of Morrison's run on New X-Men, and while I was not thrilled by the return of the spandex, and I was concerned that the franchise would be dumbed down by the return of Claremont, I find myself disturbingly LOVING Whedon on this title. And I'm not even a big X-Men fan. Still, this is beautifully written and (of course) beautifully illustrated by John Cassaday. One of the best superhero titles on the stands. Kudos to Marvel for changing direction and tone entirely from Morrison, but creating just as good a series here.

Where are the comics for all ages? Why aren't more kids reading comics? Why aren't retailers utilizing such available tools as the Cartoon Network books and the Simpsons books to reach out to new readers. Run promotions to get them into your stores. Work with local schools and libraries. Start a comic book club and meet once a week to read and discuss comics. It's a proven fact. Kids love comics. The problem these days isn't so much that kids don't like comics anymore as much as it is kids don't know comics exist anymore. We've turned comics into an adults only club and that's a shame. No more excuses. Here's your book. Use it and draft a child.

I hate it when a publisher switches from color to black and white, like Top Cow did here from issue one to issue two. It jars the reader and usually indicates that the artist was drawing for color (which really changes the way they do shading and linework. Do your market research first and if it's borderline that you'll be able to afford to do it in color, skip it and do black and white for the singles. You can always color the trade to give it that extra kick!

Okay, he's finished now. It took over a decade, I believe, but Charles Burns' Black Hole is finally finished and it will remain one of the most impressive singular visions of the modern era. It's a shame they nixed the nifty little boxed set, but maybe theyr'e holding off for the inevitable collection. This is dark and disturbing and compelling and would make a great, mature, dark cable television series. At last check, all issues are in print (in various printings) and well worth checking out... and now you don't have to wait a year between issues, like the rest of us. A testament to the strength of the storytelling, is while you've heard me mention time and again that I can't remember what happens week to week in the various Superman titles, I have yet to have a problem remember what happened a full year ago in the previous issue of Black Hole!

I didn't even know I liked Conan until I picked up the 0 issue (let me tell you a book below a dollar virtually guarantees I will at least pick it up and try it. It turns out I LOVE Conan. Either that or it was Busiek and the lush Cary Nord artwork that I love. All I know is I'm getting the trade collections of the early Marvel stuff and reading the new stuff and man do I love what's going on in this series. With Conan and The Goon and B.P.R.D. and Usagi Yojimbo all ongoing (so to speak), Dark Horse has a pretty solid little lineup of books there! And look at the diversity in those four little titles.

I wish this were one big, juicy fat trade a la Bone, Cerebus (Volumes), Compleat Moonshadow and Crisis rather than two, but I guess the money talks and this way they can get forty of your dollars rather than a likely thirty. Still, this will likely alienate some readers and it's a shame because while the book is worth forty dollars for the artwork alone, it's a pretty damned good read too! For those who like good old fashioned comic book fun without the cliches and bad dialogue, this is what you've been missing!

I wonder how much of a markup we're talking with these books here? I mean you figure cover price at $2.50 - $3.50 per book. Most retail around twenty bucks. The Superman #204 there is seventy bucks! How much do the creators charge per book to sign them, or does Nick Barucci just go to the conventions in disguise and stand in line and get them signed for free... "Hello, no I am not Nick Barucci of Dynamic Forces. I am a seven year old boy who is a big fan of your work Mr. Writer and/or Artist of this issue. Can you sign the two hundred copies of this latest key issue I bought with my allowance, please? <*insert evil laughter here*> Oh, this? Cut myself shaving."

Didja hear... DWP has apparently signed up with Mike S. Miller's latest publishing venture, dubbed Alias, not to be confused with the defunct Marvel series or the ongoing ABC series. He's basically pulling a bunch of established studios (like this one and DBPro) along with established independent series along with newcomers to create an umbrella of independent publishers under one publishing house. This strategy should give them more volume collectively, so hopefully more clout and even more important, visibility! Maybe retailers will even notice this little venture. Here's hoping!

I guess the Image comic is dead and gone now. If there wasn't an audience in the Direct comic book market for a three dollar comic, is there one for an eighteen dollar prose novel? Doubtful. Not that it was bad, but let's face it. The market isn't generally known for its generosity to new concepts.

These are all one-offs, too, so you can pick this up, and other than the six on the cover, which will make your completist gene twitch and groan, you will get a complete story in it.

These Matrix Comics have been pretty good. Even if you felt like the Wachowski's owed you money after Revolutions, but you loved them after the first movie, you should pick this up. You'll at the least remember why you loved them after the first movie.

I think more people would pay attention to the Stargate comics if it wasn't wrapped up in Avatar's variant cover whore schemes. I mean there are 12 listings here for Stargate SG-1. This is a hit show but there are 12 listings here. Retailers are overwhelmed and most probably just don't bother. I bet if Dark Horse or Devil's Due or DreamWave had this it'd be selling a lot better. But when you have to sift through variants of issue one for six months straight in the solicitations, it just gets so cumbersome you say "Forget it." It's just not worth the headache.

And thus I am torn. For you see, ACTOR (A Commitment To Our Roots) is a good cause, keeping those poor schlubs who created the comics that Marvel and DC are currently making millions off from having to spend Christmas down at the local soup kitchen. Products of a different time, they sacrificed the possibility of millions of dollars later for the job now and now many of them arent' as well off financially as some of their modern creative counterparts. The reason I am torn is I believe in ACTOR but I still can't muster up whatever it takes within me to pay seventeen bucks for somebody to staple a foil cover on Witchblade. I have the original at home and I have foil; I can make my own for much less money. You decide for yourself, and if you don't wanna spend twenty bucks for a virgin cover (how does that work anyway... did the other covers "do it"?) of Tomb Raider, check out ACTOR anyway and donate in other ways... or just donate in general. Probably the majority of the reason you love comics is because of the fine work those folks did.

Aftermath Blade of Kumori, etc. Besides being a headache for retailers, I don't see the purpose of this, unless it was determined that the Aftermath name had more value than the actual title name. Maybe If Marvel had called them New Universe Kickers Inc. or 2099 Ravage, these would be bestsellers still being published today!

I picked up the first one and it had some fun stories in it. Typical of anthologies and featuring up-and-comers to the industry. Well folks who wanna be up-and-comers. Will they be up-and-comers. Depends on who picks up and reads this magazine. If Joe Quesada picks it up and says "WOW THIS GUY RAWKS!," which is how I picture Joe commenting on art he appreciates, then that guy's got a job. If some guy who works at a restaurant bussing tables finds it under the seat where somebody dropped it and reads it, well that won't likely lead to superstardom for anyone.

I love Stan Sakai's artwork. It is as expressive and distinctive and clean and beautiful as the work of Sergio Aragones. As with Aragones, you can immediately identify a Sakia piece, even if it is not featuring his loveable ronin, Usagi Yojimbo. While an unorthodox selection for an Art Book, given the propensity for painters and girlie art books, a good choice. Anyone who wants to be a true cartoonist could do a lot worse than to study Sakai. I mean, look how much it has improved my work on www.rwtpv2.com... okay, bad example.

While I was still sorely disappointed to see the end of Morrison's run on New X-Men, and while I was not thrilled by the return of the spandex, and I was concerned that the franchise would be dumbed down by the return of Claremont, I find myself disturbingly LOVING Whedon on this title. And I'm not even a big X-Men fan. Still, this is beautifully written and (of course) beautifully illustrated by John Cassaday. One of the best superhero titles on the stands. Kudos to Marvel for changing direction and tone entirely from Morrison, but creating just as good a series here.

Where are the comics for all ages? Why aren't more kids reading comics? Why aren't retailers utilizing such available tools as the Cartoon Network books and the Simpsons books to reach out to new readers. Run promotions to get them into your stores. Work with local schools and libraries. Start a comic book club and meet once a week to read and discuss comics. It's a proven fact. Kids love comics. The problem these days isn't so much that kids don't like comics anymore as much as it is kids don't know comics exist anymore. We've turned comics into an adults only club and that's a shame. I hate it when a publisher switches from color to black and white, like Top Cow did here from issue one to issue two. It jars the reader and usually indicates that the artist was drawing for color (which really changes the way they do shading and linework. Do your market research first and if it's borderline that you'll be able to afford to do it in color, skip it and do black and white for the singles. You can always color the trade to give it that extra kick!

Okay, he's finished now. It took over a decade, I believe, but Charles Burns' Black Hole is finally finished and it will remain one of the most impressive singular visions of the modern era. It's a shame they nixed the nifty little boxed set, but maybe theyr'e holding off for the inevitable collection. This is dark and disturbing and compelling and would make a great, mature, dark cable television series. At last check, all issues are in print (in various printings) and well worth checking out... and now you don't have to wait a year between issues, like the rest of us. A testament to the strength of the storytelling, is while you've heard me mention time and again that I can't remember what happens week to week in the various Superman titles, I have yet to have a problem remember what happened a full year ago in the previous issue of Black Hole!

I didn't even know I liked Conan until I picked up the 0 issue (let me tell you a book below a dollar virtually guarantees I will at least pick it up and try it. It turns out I LOVE Conan. Either that or it was Busiek and the lush Cary Nord artwork that I love. All I know is I'm getting the trade collections of the early Marvel stuff and reading the new stuff and man do I love what's going on in this series. With Conan and The Goon and B.P.R.D. and Usagi Yojimbo all ongoing (so to speak), Dark Horse has a pretty solid little lineup of books there! And look at the diversity in those four little titles.

He's basically pulling a bunch of established studios (like this one and DBPro) along with established independent series along with newcomers to create an umbrella of independent publishers under one publishing house. This strategy should give them more volume collectively, so hopefully more clout and even more important, visibility! Maybe retailers will even notice this little venture. Here's hoping!

Mr. Lansdale has written some pretty odd and disturbing stuff... but you know, I have enjoyed the hell out of all of it. Who knew. Comics for fans frustrated with super-heroes and simple understandings of good and evil. This stuff makes you think and disturbs you beyond putting the comic down. Now that's good storytelling. These are all one-offs, too, so you can pick this up, and other than the six on the cover, which will make your completist gene twitch and groan, you will get a complete story in it.

These Matrix Comics have been pretty good. While the movies ultimately left me feeling largely disappointed and let down, the overal concept remains strong, and it is in exploring that concept that these comic shorts, along with the animated shorts of the very strong Animatrix DVD, succeed. Even if you felt like the Wachowski's owed you money after Revolutions, but you loved them after the first movie, you should pick this up. You'll at the least remember why you loved them after the first movie.

I think more people would pay attention to the Stargate comics if it wasn't wrapped up in Avatar's variant cover whore schemes. I mean there are 12 listings here for Stargate SG-1. This is a hit show but there are 12 listings here. Retailers are overwhelmed and most probably just don't bother. I bet if Dark Horse or Devil's Due or DreamWave had this it'd be selling a lot better. But when you have to sift through variants of issue one for six months straight in the solicitations, it just gets so cumbersome you say "Forget it." It's just not worth the headache.
